The elephant was originally carved from a block of Persian yellow travertine marble, a material with an unpredictable pattern of holes and a rich variety of colours throughout. The chisel marks and holes that formed the surface texture of the original stone carving were retained in the bronze casting. The bronze patina is suited to the colouring of the elephant. She is seen pushing forward against an unknown force. Her large ears, tusks and trunk balance with her petite bottom and slender tail.
